MONTHLY NEWSLETTERS 2019
FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER
MARCH NEWSLETTER
Dear Members / Friends and Guests
Welcome to this, the second Club newsletter and gossip of 2019.This month we welcomed new and old faces back to the Club for another year enjoying this wonderful hobby of ours.
If your personal details have changed, we require updated information to avoid disappointment with receiving club information.
Clifford our chairman opened the meeting explaining that due to the hall committee they have double booked the Sunday when Harry Harrington is due to be with us. This has resulted in us securing another location elsewhere. Following the club meeting we have secured another Hall for the day. This is HERSDEN COMMUNITY CENTRE. The full address is, THE AVENUE HERSDEN CANTERBURY CT3 4HL.
Website: hersdencommunitycentre.co.uk
We appreciate this is slightly further out for a couple of members who have booked for the day but this position we have been put in is unavoidable. I apologise on behalf of the club for any inconvenience this may cause.
March meeting, we had a great turnout with many members bringing trees to prepare and repot ready for the year. Several members were not present due to other commitments. We welcomed Barry to our club for the first time. He slotted in well with everyone and was eager to get involved. Gary won tree of the month with Maple in full leaf, unfortunately I forgot to take any photographs.
It was great to see such a variety of material brought. During the evening we had a power cut in the hall resulting in a quick whip round for the money for the meter. The meeting finished early mainly because of the cold. Les was kind enough to bring a few of his scrolls for us to look and learn about.
Again, this year I hope to receive club night and event photographs and any articles from you about bonsai or any subject, so I can add it both to our newsletters and the website with your permission. Please don’t forget about our blogsite on the club site and of course our Facebook page for information. These are ways to discuss bonsai information with other members at any time. You can also join Friends who like KENT BONSAI CLUB on Facebook this is an ever-growing page for small talk and items for sale from bonsai hobbyists around the country. This group is monitored by me so every message I receive is checked.
With new technology now available it is easy to look things up on the internet or social media but the best way to lean about all things bonsai is within the club environment from the members with many years’ experience, with many clubs closing due to lack of interest around the country we must all support our club as much as possible.
With this in mind, each Club workshop meeting a senior member of the club will now be available to spend time with new members on a one to one basis. Showing and explaining the basics of bonsai and tree selection etc.
Next month we welcome Alex from Mia Bonsai please try and attend as this will be a great evening.

APRIL NEWSLETTER
Welcome to this, the third Club newsletter and gossip of 2019.This month we welcomed new and old faces back to the Club for another meeting enjoying this wonderful hobby of ours.
If your personal details have changed, we require updated information to avoid disappointment with receiving club information. We need your phone number and email address.
Clifford our chairman opened the meeting explaining that due to unforeseen circumstances Alex Rudd our speaker for the evening was going to be delayed for a while.
We understand that a couple of our members were unhappy about the delay but sometimes this is unavoidable. I apologise on behalf of the club for any inconvenience this may have caused.
We had a great turnout for the evening with many members bringing trees for Alex to look at for advice. Several members were not present due to other commitments or sickness (me). I have received a great number of messages from members etc informing me of their enjoyment during the evening. All the photographs added to this newsletter and those on the website were taken by James Dutch a member of the club.
Tree of the month chosen by Alex and was won by Gary. I have added a picture of this very pretty maple.
Now as most of you are aware each month, I must have a little moan about something, why because I’m outspoken and the secretary. Let’s start with the Hanami show the club recently attended for the third year running at Brogdale Nurseries. I was unwell and not able to make it. WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE MEMBERS, if it wasn’t for CLIFFORD and TIM no one would have turned up to represent the club? Must we always rely on the few to attend, set up, bring exhibits at all our shows etc. You are part of the club please try to help at future events.
Please may I ask members that before they visit garden centres etc they inform me. This is to avoid another member visiting the same place and repeating things.
I hope to continue receiving club night and event photographs and any articles from you about bonsai or any subject, so I can add it both to our newsletters and the website with your permission. Please don’t forget about our blogsite on the club site and of course our Facebook page for information. These are ways to discuss bonsai information with other members at any time. Brogdale Events have contacted me to thank us for a wonderful display and to invite us back next year. I have confirmed our place in next years event. This is to be held on Sunday April 19th, 2020.
On Sunday 12th May we held our Late Spring Show. This was very well supported by a great number of members. The material on display this year well surpassed last year. A full report with pictures kindly supplied by Roger can be found on our website. I would like to thank everyone who helped in the setup, displays and clearing up at the end of the day. If any members still have photos of the event, please can you email them to me.

Now as most of you know at this time, I must have a moan about something, well this month it’s about the R.H.S Chelsea which has been held recently. It was a fantastic show with beautiful displays and gardens BUT Bonsai was shown and mentioned for a total of 20 seconds. During this period, they managed to confirm to me that they didn’t have a clue about bonsai. Phew glad that’s of my chest.
Next month is a general workshop evening. Please bring material to work on.

HARRY HARRINGTON ALL DAY WORKSHOP SUNDAY JULY21st 2019
On Sunday 21st July we welcomed Harry to our club to spend the day with us and our trees. Due to a mix up at our usual hall we relocated at Hersden Village Community Hall. We were made very welcome by the caretaker who assisted us with tables to work on. We thank the hall committee for letting us stage this event at such short notice.
Once the introductions had been carried out it was down to work. Ten club members had taken up the chance to spend time under the tuition of one of the best-known bonsai professionals in Europe. Members had arrived with trees in all stages of development, from trees that just needed refining to raw Yamadori.
Gary arrived with a gorgeous olive that needed refining, Les had his large hawthorn ready for carving this is looking better every time I see it. Adrian’s collected hawthorn required some serious trunk bending which Harry carried out with precision. Barry had recently purchased a Juniper for the workshop, Harry said it was a great tree with massive potential (last time I sell a tree cheap). Shane spent a long time wiring a pine so Harry could style it. Steve wired his trees and received guidance from. Donald had a large collected tree he worked on. Cliff had a maple to work on. James had brought along several trees to keep him busy all day.
The day closed around 4-40pm so Harry could drive home, members remained in the car park for some time discussing the day. Everyone was in high spirits and very pleased with how the day went for us all.
I can sum the day up in a few words, brilliant from start to finish. We will be inviting Harry back again to our club soon.
Please have a look at all the photos taken on the day including the group photo taken at the end with the large hawthorn owned and carved by Les.
SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER
Last month saw us have a general workshop evening, where most member arrived with material to work on. Unfortunately, Simon couldn’t attend the meeting with the pots we had made so I went to his home in Maidstone and collected them. All members present were happy with their pots and the colour of the glazes. I have spoken to Simon and thanked him.
I can now confirm that KENT BONSAI CLUB will be moving location. The new hall is at Dunkirk near Harbledown. Our first meeting there will be in Feb 2020. Second Wednesday of each month 7 – 10. I will talk to all members present next month with more details.
This month we welcome Lee Verhorevoort to our club to work on members trees so remember to bring tree for him to work on.
Most of you are aware that the NATIONAL BONSAI SHOW took place on Sat 14th and Sun 15th Sept in Bury. I had “Ollie” my Olive chosen for this event. I am pleased to announce that I was awarded a certificate of Excellence for my composition.
Next month sees the club show trees at the Heathrow Club show. Three years running I have booked our space to show trees as a club, each year I have had to contact the organisers to say we can’t be bothered. If it happens again this year, I will put a big sign on our display area explaining why we’re not there. Also, this show is special for me as I am involved in the U.K. final of the New talent competition. Your support on the day would be greatly appreciated.
Les has kindly organised and had made a new club sign in preparation for the Heathrow Club Show in October, it looks great.

Again, I have ONE THING to moan about. It has been brought to my attention that the number of members who make the effort to bring trees for tree of the month has reduced greatly. Please try to bring a tree if possible, it is always rewarding to see members trees.
Please have a look at the clubs fully updated website with pictures of our Weekend at the National Bonsai Show at Bury.
