Corin Tomlinsons Weekend Bash 2014
During the late summer Jason and our secretary visited Greenwood Bonsai Nursery in Nottingham for Corin's Annual Weekend of Trees, Demonstrations and very good food provided by his wife and family. This is the second time I've been and found his hospitality second to none. This time he let Jason and I stay in his house for the days we were there. We spent the weekend looking at the fantastic quality of tree's including his late fathers collection. Harry Tomlinson is known to most bonsai hobbyists and Professional's alike. He left a Legacy to which Corin and his brother Paul carry on with a style of there own. His demonstrations during the weekend filled us with knowledge and laughter. I would recommend a visit at any time to this Nursery and loose yourself in this wonderland of trees. Below I have tried to give you a quick insight of the weekend and of Harry's trees.

ANNUAL CLUB SHOW HELD ON 10TH MAY 2015
A total extravaganza of Bonsai Trees small and large greeted everyone who visited the show. The standard and content of the displays even surpassed previous years. The high volume of people old and new visiting the show were able to take their time looking at each display with club members on hand to answer any questions, before taking refreshments or looking for pots, tools and trees that were on sale.
A demonstration table was available so visitors and hobbyists could bring trees for advice or just watch two of our members working on trees and taking questions asked.
Each visitor was asked to vote on their favourite tree and composition on the day. The day ended with the Trophy presented by our Chairmen to Gary Brown for his lovely Maple.
If you wish to come along to any of our meetings we meet at the hall on the second Wednesday of each month. You will be made most welcome by all the members see our contact page.
The committee would like to thank all concerned for making the 2015 show a very special one.

Nicks 10th Anniversary Weekend show 2015
Each year Nick puts on a wonderful show for both Local Clubs and the public. This year was very special to both Nick and all that know the family.
Sadly only a few months ago Nick lost his mother after a short illness. In true Nick fashion he insisted that the weekend should go ahead.
Being the 10th anniversary both he and Kent Club promised we would work hard to make it special in her memory.
The weekend had the best standard of trees ever on display for all to see. There were Oriental visitors carrying out displays along with traders.
On Sunday Kent Club presented Nick with a brass plaque in memory of his mum.
Below is a few pictures of trees taken on the day.

Corin Tomlinson Greenwoond Nursery Bonsai Bash 2015
After spending the previous day repairing my car after I managed to reverse it into my house the time had finally arrived for me to make my yearly visit to see my good friends Corin & Paul Tomlinson of Greenwood Bonsai Nottingham for their ‘Bonsai Bash’.I arrived late Friday evening after an eventful drive. Nobody informed me of the Cycle racing in the city centre of Nottingham so all the roads were closed for a long time.
Right, after a good night rest I drove the couple of miles to the Nursery where I was greeted by both Corin and Paul who were busy getting the place ready for the ‘Bash’. This gave me the chance to have a cup of tea and a wander around the Nursery. The whole place looked great with every tree looking so healthy and presentable. With thousands of trees to look after of very diverse species and sizes its mind blowing to look at. I had left my wallet deliberately in the car to stop me spending straight away. The racks were full of pots for sale at knockdown prices this was because there were seconds or damaged in some way. I picked out what I required and put them to one side. Some had tiny firing cracks or blemishes so for club use perfect. By the end of the weekend the racks were empty. I always purchase my soils here because of the range and price.
Corin had finished getting ready for his first demo, an Escallonia, which he had first worked on in 2014. After a quick look round the shop I refilled my cup and took my front row seat ready and waiting to watch the most gifted man I know start his performance. For the next couple of hours he styled the tree with his usual wit and jokes. At the end it looked great. It was time for lunch, this year Corin had employed the services of a Pizza making company. These were cooked over a wooden fire. Yummy tasted great. Corin’s wife had cakes etc for sale.
The Demonstration’s resumed at 2pm. This next tree just happens to be my favourite species The Common Hawthorn. As you can see from the photos a lot of work was put in to improve it. After this I spent a lot of time looking at Corin’s own impressive collection of Trees which was on display in the workshop a couple of which were past Bonsai Bash demo trees.
Sunday was spent looking in more detail at the trees for sale in the Nursery and dry goods within the large and well stocked shop.Demonstrations continued all day, but I spent it talking to friends. I popped in to see Corin’s stepmother to have a good look at the pottery she does. Wow its brilliant.
To end with thanks to everyone involved in putting on the Bash I recommend this special weekend to anyone who can make it.
Nick Pierce celebrating his 60th
Birthday and Tributes to his late Mother
Last Sunday on the 20th Sept saw we all gathered at Nick’s Bonsai Nursery to celebrate his 60th birthday and his late mother.
When my wife and I arrived we were greeted by Nick and his girlfriend Amanda. There were around 100 people present and more arriving. A large Bar-B-Q under the control of a knowledgeable cook set to one side. The selection of all the food was available was great especially the coffee cake kindly given by Jolana from our Club. Plenty of drink laid out on tables consisting of beers, wines and soft drinks.
Nick had arranged two Bands for the party, both were brilliant and entertained us during the afternoon and evening. Nick was presented with a birthday cake unfortunately they couldn’t fit 60 candles on it so four were put on.
He gave a short speech thanking everyone for going, and giving KENT BONSAI CLUB a big thankyou for the Plaque in remembrance of his late mother Elizabeth who sadly passed away earlier in the year.
Just when the evening was in full swing Elvis Presley turned up to entertain us (I thought he was working in a chip shop).
Thanks to everyone who went especially the Club members including Mick who was great to see, and was full of his usual wit.
BELOW IS A SERIES OF PHOTOS TAKEN OF THE DAY. THESE WILL TAKE A SHORT WHILE TO DOWNLOAD.

SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER
Last month saw us have a general workshop evening, where most member arrived with material to work on. Unfortunately, Simon couldn’t attend the meeting with the pots we had made so I went to his home in Maidstone and collected them. All members present were happy with their pots and the colour of the glazes. I have spoken to Simon and thanked him.
I can now confirm that KENT BONSAI CLUB will be moving location. The new hall is at Dunkirk near Harbledown. Our first meeting there will be in Feb 2020. Second Wednesday of each month 7 – 10. I will talk to all members present next month with more details.
This month we welcome Lee Verhorevoort to our club to work on members trees so remember to bring tree for him to work on.
Most of you are aware that the NATIONAL BONSAI SHOW took place on Sat 14th and Sun 15th Sept in Bury. I had “Ollie” my Olive chosen for this event. I am pleased to announce that I was awarded a certificate of Excellence for my composition.
Next month sees the club show trees at the Heathrow Club show. Three years running I have booked our space to show trees as a club, each year I have had to contact the organisers to say we can’t be bothered. If it happens again this year, I will put a big sign on our display area explaining why we’re not there. Also, this show is special for me as I am involved in the U.K. final of the New talent competition. Your support on the day would be greatly appreciated.
Les has kindly organised and had made a new club sign in preparation for the Heathrow Club Show in October, it looks great.
I hope to continue receiving club night and event photographs and any articles from you about bonsai or any subject, so I can add it both to our newsletters and the website with your permission. Please don’t forget about our blogsite on the club site and of course our Facebook page for information. These are ways to discuss bonsai information with other members at any time. You can also join FRIENDS WHO LIKE KENT BONSAI CLUB on Facebook this is an ever-growing page for small talk and items for sale from bonsai hobbyists around the country. This group is monitored by me so every message I receive is checked.
With new technology now available it is easy to look things up on the internet or social media but the best way to lean about all things bonsai is within the club environment from the members with many years’ experience, with many clubs closing due to lack of interest around the country we must all support our club as much as possible.
Each Club workshop meeting a senior member of the club will now be available to spend time with new members on a one to one basis. Showing and explaining the basics of bonsai and tree selection etc.
Again, I have ONE THING to moan about. It has been brought to my attention that the number of members who make the effort to bring trees for tree of the month has reduced greatly. Please try to bring a tree if possible, it is always rewarding to see members trees.yone who helped in the setup, displays and clearing up at the end of the day. If any members still have photos of the event, please can you email them to me.
I can confirm that I have booked a KENT BONSAI CLUB display table at the up and coming Bonsai Show held at Heathrow on Sunday October 20th. This show is supported by about 40 clubs plus traders and displays. Trees for this event will be chosen during a normal club night nearer the date.

Now as most of you know at this time, I must have a moan about something, well this month it’s about the R.H.S Chelsea which has been held recently. It was a fantastic show with beautiful displays and gardens BUT Bonsai was shown and mentioned for a total of 20 seconds. During this period, they managed to confirm to me that they didn’t have a clue about bonsai. Phew glad that’s of my chest.
Next month is a general workshop evening. Please bring material to work on.

This year was the best Club Show to date.
8am saw many Club members present, excited and eager to get started on the setup procedure. Gary our show organiser was at the helm to delegate what had to be done.
Clifford was preparing the kitchen and seating area ready for drinks and hot food. Members set up the large sales area we had in another room where members brought items to sale. Items for sale ranged from accent plants to trees, books, pots and sundry items.
The standard of the displays showed how far most members have come on their personal bonsai journey. The range in trees alone was mind blowing from small Shohin to Huge Chuhin. The standard of accent plants and display compositions had improved from last year. It was satisfying to see the odd scroll being used with some displays.
The day was spent talking to the public that attended, new friends and members were made.
Shane Hales was awarded best tree in show and the publics choice award for his stunning Trees.
The day came to a close around 4-30pm at which time members helped to clear up and dismantle displays very quickly.

Dear Members / Friends and Guests
Welcome to this, the second Club newsletter and gossip of 2019.This month we welcomed new and old faces back to the Club for another year enjoying this wonderful hobby of ours.
If your personal details have changed, we require updated information to avoid disappointment with receiving club information.
Clifford our chairman opened the meeting explaining that due to the hall committee they have double booked the Sunday when Harry Harrington is due to be with us. This has resulted in us securing another location elsewhere. Following the club meeting we have secured another Hall for the day. This is HERSDEN COMMUNITY CENTRE. The full address is, THE AVENUE HERSDEN CANTERBURY CT3 4HL.
Website: hersdencommunitycentre.co.uk
We appreciate this is slightly further out for a couple of members who have booked for the day but this position we have been put in is unavoidable. I apologise on behalf of the club for any inconvenience this may cause.
March meeting, we had a great turnout with many members bringing trees to prepare and repot ready for the year. Several members were not present due to other commitments. We welcomed Barry to our club for the first time. He slotted in well with everyone and was eager to get involved. Gary won tree of the month with Maple in full leaf, unfortunately I forgot to take any photographs.
It was great to see such a variety of material brought. During the evening we had a power cut in the hall resulting in a quick whip round for the money for the meter. The meeting finished early mainly because of the cold. Les was kind enough to bring a few of his scrolls for us to look and learn about.
Again, this year I hope to receive club night and event photographs and any articles from you about bonsai or any subject, so I can add it both to our newsletters and the website with your permission. We had a great turnout for the evening with many members bringing trees for Alex to look at for advice. Several members were not present due to other commitments or sickness (me). I have received a great number of messages from members etc informing me of their enjoyment during the evening. All the photographs added to this newsletter and those on the website were taken by James Dutch a member of the club.
Tree of the month chosen by Alex and was won by Gary. I have added a picture of this very pretty maple.
Now as most of you are aware each month, I must have a little moan about something, why because I’m outspoken and the secretary. Let’s start with the Hanami show the club recently attended for the third year running at Brogdale Nurseries. I was unwell and not able to make it. WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE MEMBERS, if it wasn’t for CLIFFORD and TIM no one would have turned up to represent the club? Must we always rely on the few to attend, set up, bring exhibits at all our shows etc. You are part of the club please try to help at future events.
Please may I ask members that before they visit garden centres etc they inform me. This is to avoid another member visiting the same place and repeating things.

Next month is a general workshop evening and Club Show Prep.

Brogdale Events have contacted me to thank us for a wonderful display and to invite us back next year. I have confirmed our place in next years event. This is to be held on Sunday April 19th, 2020.
On Sunday 12th May we held our Late Spring Show. This was very well supported by a great number of members. The material on display this year well surpassed last year. A full report with pictures kindly supplied by Roger can be found on our website. I would like to thank everyone who helped in the setup, displays and clearing up at the end of the day.

HARRY HARRINGTON ALL DAY WORKSHOP SUNDAY JULY21st 2019
On Sunday 21st July we welcomed Harry to our club to spend the day with us and our trees. Due to a mix up at our usual hall we relocated at Hersden Village Community Hall. We were made very welcome by the caretaker who assisted us with tables to work on. We thank the hall committee for letting us stage this event at such short notice.
Once the introductions had been carried out it was down to work. Ten club members had taken up the chance to spend time under the tuition of one of the best-known bonsai professionals in Europe. Members had arrived with trees in all stages of development, from trees that just needed refining to raw Yamadori.
Gary arrived with a gorgeous olive that needed refining, Les had his large hawthorn ready for carving this is looking better every time I see it. Adrian’s collected hawthorn required some serious trunk bending which Harry carried out with precision. Barry had recently purchased a Juniper for the workshop, Harry said it was a great tree with massive potential (last time I sell a tree cheap). Shane spent a long time wiring a pine so Harry could style it. Steve wired his trees and received guidance from. Donald had a large collected tree he worked on. Cliff had a maple to work on. James had brought along several trees to keep him busy all day.
The day closed around 4-40pm so Harry could drive home, members remained in the car park for some time discussing the day. Everyone was in high spirits and very pleased with how the day went for us all.
I can sum the day up in a few words, brilliant from start to finish. We will be inviting Harry back again to our club soon.
Please have a look at all the photos taken on the day including the group photo taken at the end with the large hawthorn owned and carved by Les.

Again, I have ONE THING to moan about. It has been brought to my attention that the number of members who make the effort to bring trees for tree of the month has reduced greatly. Please try to bring a tree if possible, it is always rewarding to see members trees.
